A captivating, Longquan celadon porcelain gaiwan with the most delicately incised water-lily pattern in smoky blue glaze. Northern Song celadon kilns favored incised patterns such as this. Designs were, as they are here, hand-sharpened into the white bisque ware before being glazed for a second firing. The glaze pools in the more deeply carved areas and creates a slightly darker color. The resulting effect of the design appears on the surface as quiet as a watermark. Ensemble includes lid, bowl, and saucer.
This gaiwan is glazed inside and out for use with any type of tea.
Translucent celadon porcelain has been produced in Longquan for at least nine centuries. Since the overthrow of the Northern Song dynasty in the 1120’s, all production of jade-green porcelain has been crafted by artisans in the environs of the Southern Song dynasty near Hangzhou. Over 500 historic kilns have been uncovered around Lishui and southern Zhejian province.
