A handsome, Longquan celadon porcelain tea cup adorned with hand-painted, watercolor-like stripes of Big Sur jade-green glaze. An unusual one of a kind cha bei that will add dimension and interest to any tea collection.
Translucent celadon porcelain has been produced in Longquan for at least nine centuries. Since the overthrow of the Northern Song dynasty in the 1120’s, all production of jade-green porcelain has been crafted by artisans in the environs of the Southern Song dynasty near Hangzhou. Over 500 historic kilns have been uncovered around Lishui and southern Zhejian province.
The bottle-glass-like, smoky blue begins as a thick glaze which is skillfully applied over white bisque ware by hand so that it enrobes the cup evenly during firing. The optical effect of light bouncing off the white, bisque ware base and passing through the thick, translucent smoky blue glaze back to your eyes produces an enchanting depth of color.
