Inspired by an eastern oil lamp design, one could imagine it lit the way for Lu Yu to brush his essential Classic of Tea on rice paper circa 760AD. This partially handmade teapot is crafted from authentic Zi ni (purple clay).
Zi ni clay has been procured for centuries from only the foothills near Yixing in Jiangsu province. Zi ni clay fires somewhat porous, and with continued use will retain a tea’s oils and essence.
This teapot is finished in a deep burnt-umber brown.
It is widely believed a well-seasoned pot brews the best tea. Therefore, Yixing enthusiasts devote one pot to each type of tea so to not mix flavors.
Yixing teapots are usually more petite than western versions and are specifically designed for Gongfu steeping. The Gongfu method enlists a generous amount of tea with smaller amounts of water for shorter steeping times with multiple brews. Many believe Gongfu steeping extracts a tea’s truest character and its greatest volume for each pot of leaf. Hand-wash with water only (no soap or detergents) and air-dry.
